Backbends - Key to Fluid Transitions and Dynamic Sequencing

Backbends form a Cornerstone of all styles of Yoga Asana practice.

Yet for many practitioners they are uncomfortable and stressful.

Arguably, they represent the single most challenging movement to co-ordinate through the spine in the canon of Yoga postures.

To top this off --

The transition from Backbend into the opposite position for the spine of Leaning Forward Bend is standard practice in Yoga, and may be repeated multiple times in just one sequence.

How can we work Backbends comfortably and with enjoyment?

&

How can we maintain Spinal Health in regular transitions between two opposing positions of the Spine?

This workshop breaks down good technique for Backbends in lying, seated and standing. It will look at postures that combine Twists, Side Bends and Hip Opening with Backbends for maximum ease and minimum stress on the joints.

We will also experiment with applying our new techniques in Dynamic Posture Sequencing.

Caroline Ings-Chambers Caroline Ings-Chambers

Caroline has taught yoga for twelve years and health related exercise for fourteen years.

Clinically diagnosed with chronic fatigue syndrome she founded a personal yoga practice which cured her body and became her inspiration for teaching. Today, her teaching draws on her sixteen years of yoga practice, her work in Pilates and Dance (IDTA Ballet) – also her wide knowledge bases in exercise and fitness (YMCAfit qualified).

Caroline’s method works to open and strengthen the body simultaneously. Preparing in advance for every facet of a posture, achieves physical alignment, and brings grace and ease to the practice, whether in strong held positions or flowing sequences.

Philosophy is an ever present and long standing interest across all her work. The philosopher John Ruskin formed the subject of her PhD, which she is currently preparing
for publication.

Patrick McCann Patrick McCann

Patrick qualified as an Exercise to Music instructor in 1995 and has been teaching regularly in London's premier gyms since then. He has an energetic, entertaining and creative teaching style which has built him a loyal fitness following. He teaches several types of classes including abs, aerobics, aqua, body conditioning, BodyPump, circuit, core conditioning, spin, step and stretch. He has a particular strength in freestyle instruction. A former City solicitor, Patrick's full-time job is as Global Head of Learning and Development in one of the UK's largest elite law firms.
